Pamela Evans
The Digger Lady
Can you remember what you were doing at 16? Was it learning to drive a digger by any chance?
They say do what you love (sic) and that philosophy has led Pamela Evans to develop a successful business despite being told by teachers that her passion for all things diggers and excavation was not a career path she should follow.
Ignoring their advice, in 2001, she became the first female and youngest person to obtain a 360° tracked excavator licence, working with her Dad at weekends.
But this isn’t a story of overnight success, but one of personal struggle. In 2016, Pamela was suffering from post-natal depression, debt and supporting her husband through numerous surgeries to save his sight.
“We were reliant on food bank vouchers and benefits. The only time I felt good about myself was when I was digging with my Dad at weekends.”
Determined to make a better life for her family, she made a £150 investment in hiring a digger & 5 gallons of diesel for a week to complete a job for a local builder and The Digger Lady business was born.
Her goals now include inspiring the next generation of ‘digger ladies’ working with schools, communities and charities.
This ‘Digger Lady’ may have started her business from a place of self-doubt, but her passion and determination ensured she not only survived but thrived in this male dominated industry, breaking down barriers and becoming a role model for other girls and women.
Pamela will be sharing her story at the 33rd Inspiring Women Awards on 16th May 2025. More details here
