2026 Finalist – Bushra Ahmed

Turning adversity into influence in life’s third quarter
Bushra Ahmed’s story is one of resilience, courage, and lifelong advocacy. A second-generation Londoner and proud daughter of South Asian immigrants, Bushra has spent decades ensuring that the voices of marginalised communities are not simply heard but actively included in shaping decisions that affect them. Today, in what she describes as the powerful “third quarter” of her life, she continues to champion equality, opportunity, and leadership for women and young people around the world.
Bushra’s commitment to justice was shaped early in life. As a teenager growing up in London in the 1980s, she witnessed the devastating impact of racism and social unrest culminating in the 2011 riots that saw her family’s dry-cleaning business, built through years of hard work, destroyed. While many might have felt powerless, Bushra found her voice. When a visiting elected official came to hear the community’s concerns, she spoke up with such clarity and conviction about leadership responsibility that long-delayed compensation payments were released shortly afterwards.
That moment ignited a lifelong determination to ensure that those in positions of power listen to the communities they serve.
Over the years, Bushra has held influential roles across civic, social and philanthropic sectors. She has served in leadership roles with organisations including Lloyds Bank Foundation, 50:50 Parliament, and global initiatives that champion equality and representation. In every space she enters, from boardrooms to community forums, Bushra advocates for decision-making that is done with women and marginalised communities, not for them.
Her passion for empowering future generations extends far beyond the UK. As an advisor and champion with beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship, the world’s largest fellowship for youth-led environmental innovation, Bushra mentors young entrepreneurs from more than 50 countries.
She has led masterclasses teaching young innovators how to transform failure into opportunity and has built supportive peer networks for emerging female leaders launching environmental and social impact projects. The young people she supports have collectively launched hundreds of sustainability initiatives and impacted communities around the world.
True to her spirit of reinvention, Bushra continues to explore new ideas even later in life. At the age of 60, she stepped far outside her comfort zone to participate in the H&M Foundation’s Knit Initiative, collaborating with a global team to develop solutions for advancing inclusivity in the fashion industry. The experience opened new opportunities and led to the development of HumaniTree, a diversity, equity and inclusion technology solution that reflects her lifelong mission of building more inclusive systems.
Bushra Ahmed embodies the spirit of a third quarter woman: proof that influence, courage and purpose do not diminish with age, they deepen. Her life’s work demonstrates that the later chapters of life can be the most powerful, inspiring and transformative of all.
Bushra will be sharing her story at the 34th annual Inspiring Women awards on 15th May 2026 at The Lowry Hotel. More details here.
